Onikka is an accomplished singer / songwriter. (She penned all six songs on her debut EP.) She is a very clever lyricist and she impressively marries melody and lyrics. She has a heart for people and it’s evident in everything she does. Her stage persona is fierce and playful. One thing is for sure. She will catch you off guard. She will surprise you. She is a force to be reckoned with.
What is your favorite color?
Black and blue.
What is your favorite food?
Pizza, pasta, garlic bread, and bread in general, and Italian food in general too.
Do you have any pets?
What is your favorite genre of music?
I’ll listen to almost anything, but I listen to Indie/pop, alternative/pop, and hip hop/R&B the most.
When and how did your interest in music begin?
I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I started singing along to Disney movies, Hannah Montana, the cheetah girls, and songs on the radio. Then, as I got older, I discovered YouTube and other ways to listen to different genres of music, and I’ve just been singing since.
Who is your favorite music artist? Why?
I like a lot of artists but one of my all time favorites is Jon Bellion. He’s a brilliant lyricist and he lays down the coolest, most interesting and unique beats. He’s very creative and I admire his ability to create raw, passionate, and real music without shying away from standing up for his faith.
If you could perform on stage with anyone, who would it be? Why?
Probably like… Beyoncé or my sister, actually. Beyoncé because she’s a legend. I mean she has a killer range, amazing pitch accuracy, and she gets down and dances fabulously at the same time. Or my sister because she’s like my best friend and we’d have a lot of fun performing together like we do jamming out to music in the car.
How would you describe yourself as an artist?
My music puts a heavy emphasis on lyrics. I put more effort into the kind of message I want to get across and the feelings I want to express or invoke than coming up with fancy runs. I want to be relatable without compromising my morals or my faith.
Who do you most admire? Why
I look up to different people for different things. I greatly admire my mom for how graceful and patient she manages to be with me when I’m a mess while also handling a million other things. I look up to my father for treating my mom like a queen and my sisters and I like princesses, serving us so well even though he’s tired from working all day to provide for us. There are many others, but I can’t name them all.
What are some of your interests/hobbies other than music?
I love dancing, be it contemporary/ballet, grooving/hip hop, or salsa and bachata. I also love flipping around, reading, writing, and spending time with friends. .
What is something interesting about you?
I suppose the fact that I graduated high school and started college 15 is kinda interesting, idk. Uhhh I’ve also read the entire Harry Potter series 11 times. .
What qualities do you have that you believe are unique?
I’m not the only, but definitely one of the fewer people who operate just as much in their left brain as their right brain. I like singing and dancing and art and being free spirited, but I’m also logical, analytical, organized, and good with numbers.
Have you ever received any prominent award or recognition for anything you've done? (music, art, academics, athletics, etc.)
I qualified for the national team (level 8) in power tumbling, and I graduated high school as valedictorian (class of 1).
Is there anything you would like everyone to know about you?
This sounds kind of personal, so I’m just gonna say that I really love Italian food, juice, Harry Potter, and strongly advocate for self love.
